Structural functionalism. Structural functionalism (also called functionalism) views society as a complex system whose parts work together to promote solidarity and stability. Each social institution  -  the family, education, religion, the economy, government  -  serves specific functions that contribute to the overall operation of society. Emile Durkheim, a founding figure of sociology, laid the groundwork for this perspective by studying how social institutions create solidarity and maintain social order. Talcott Parsons and Robert Merton further developed the functionalist perspective in the twentieth century.

Merton distinguished between manifest functions (intended and recognized consequences of social institutions) and latent functions (unintended and often unrecognized consequences). For example, the manifest function of education is to transmit knowledge and skills, while latent functions include socialization, creation of peer networks, and keeping young people out of the labor market. Merton also identified dysfunctions  -  aspects of institutions that undermine social stability.

Conflict theory ("Conflict theory"), rooted in the work of Karl Marx, views society not as a harmonious system but as an arena of inequality and conflict, where different groups compete for scarce resources and dominant groups use their power to maintain privilege. Symbolic interactionism ("Feminist theory") focuses on the micro-level  -  how individuals create meaning through social interaction, language, and symbols. Feminist theory ("Feminist theory") examines how gender inequality is built into social structures. Understanding these major theoretical perspectives and being able to apply them to social phenomena is one of the most important skills tested on the CLEP exam.
