People's perceptions and definitions of situations shape their behavior and thus create real social outcomes. The Thomas theorem, formulated by sociologist W.I. Thomas (and his wife Dorothy Swaine Thomas), is one of the most important principles in sociology. It states that the way people perceive and define a situation determines how they act in that situation, and their actions produce real consequences regardless of whether the original perception was accurate. A false rumor that a bank is failing can cause a real bank run as panicked depositors withdraw their funds, actually causing the bank to fail.
