Their own actions and decisions largely determine the outcomes they experience. Locus of control, developed by Julian Rotter, refers to the degree to which individuals believe they can control events affecting them. People with an internal locus of control believe outcomes are primarily determined by their own actions, decisions, and efforts. They take initiative, accept responsibility, and actively shape their circumstances.

Research consistently shows that internals tend to have more favorable work outcomes: higher job satisfaction, greater performance, more proactive behavior, and stronger organizational commitment. They are also more likely to seek information, engage in problem-solving, and take leadership roles. However, an extremely internal locus can be problematic  -  such individuals may struggle to accept genuinely uncontrollable circumstances or underestimate systemic barriers.
